Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who stop using popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these medications need to be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
