A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
